253MA s30815 1.4835 Stainless steel is a lean austenitic heat resistant alloy with high strength and outstanding oxidation resistance. 253 MA maintains its heat resistant properties by advanced control of micro alloy additions. The use of rare earth metals in combination with silicon gives superior oxidation resistance up to 2000°F. Nitrogen, carbon and a dispersion of rare earth and alkali metal oxides combine to provide creep rupture strength comparable to the nickel base alloys. A wide variety of components requiring high strength at elevated temperatures such as heat exchangers, kilns, stack dampers and oven components are common applications for 253 MA.

Stainless steel 253 MA is readily fabricated by standard commercial procedures. In comparison to carbon steel, stainless steels are tougher and tend to work harden rapidly. However, with positive feeds and slow speeds combined with abundant cutting fluid this alloys tendency to work harden may be minimized. 253MA contains fairly low nickel content, which gives it some advantage in reducing sulphide atmospheres when compared to high nickel alloys and to Grade 310. The inclusion of high silicon, nitrogen and cerium contents gives the steel good oxide stability, high elevated temperature strength and excellent resistance to sigma phase precipitation.

253MA is a kind of heat resistant Austenitic stainless steel (Austenitic stainless steel), for high creep strength, creep strength and good resistance to corrosion of application and design.

253 MA has very high resistance to oxidation, especially under cyclic conditions, due to the addition of reactive elements, such as cerium (Ce). The high mechanical strength of Sandvik 253 MA allows for thinner tube wall constructions compared with using materials of the ASTM 310 type. Despite the material's high strength, ductility is not reduced, and good formability is maintained.

253MA is a grade combining excellent service properties at high temperatures with ease of fabrication. It resists oxidation at temperatures up to 1150°C and can provide superior service to Grade 310 in carbon, nitrogen and sulphur containing atmospheres. Another proprietary designation covering this grade is 2111HTR. 253MA contains fairly low nickel content, which gives it some advantage in reducing sulphide atmospheres when compared to high nickel alloys and to Grade 310. The austenitic structure gives this grade excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures.
